In Vietnamese, hỗ trợ and ủng hộ both translate to “support,” but they are used in different contexts.
Hỗ trợ = to provide practical help or assistance (actions, resources, services).
Ủng hộ = to show agreement, encouragement, or approval (opinions, feelings, or backing an idea/person).
Think of it this way:
👉 Hỗ trợ = “helping hands”
👉 Ủng hộ = “agreeing or cheering”
Examples
Tôi hỗ trợ bạn làm bài tập.
→ I support (help) you with your homework.
Tôi ủng hộ ý kiến của bạn.
→ I support (agree with) your opinion.
Công ty hỗ trợ nhân viên về tài chính.
→ The company provides financial support to employees.
Nhiều người ủng hộ dự án này.
→ Many people support (approve of) this project.
Tips & Notes
Use hỗ trợ when there is a clear action or tangible help.
Use ủng hộ when talking about ideas, decisions, campaigns, or people you believe in.
Sometimes both can appear in one situation, but with different meanings:
Tôi ủng hộ bạn và sẽ hỗ trợ bạn.
→ I agree with you and will help you.
