Although both "thử thách" and "đánh đố" involve giving someone a difficult task or question, they have different meanings and intentions.
1. Thử thách
"Thử thách" means to challenge someone or to present a difficult task that encourages effort, growth, or competition. The goal is usually positive: helping someone improve, test their ability, or achieve something difficult.
Examples
Công việc này rất thử thách. - This job is very challenging.
(Here, the job is difficult, but it is not impossible or unfair.)
2. Đánh đố
"Đánh đố" means to puzzle, trick, or intentionally make something difficult for someone to answer or understand. The difficulty is often unnecessary, unfair, or designed to confuse people.
Examples:
Câu hỏi này như đang đánh đố tôi - This question feels like a trick question.
(The speaker thinks the question is confusing or unfairly difficult.)
